Modesty Going Mainstream

May 04, 2017

Do you ever feel that you don’t really like what’s trendy and cool but you still want to be trendy and cool? This basically explains my relationship with 99.794% of all trends that dominate retail chains across the world. It’s like, I’m all for having six billion styles of crop tops because I want women who wear them to have all the options, but it would be great if we could throw in other types of clothes for women who don’t. Luckily every now and then trends come up that work in a modest-dressing girl's favor, and I wanted to talk about a couple that have happened recently.

  1. T-shirt Under Spaghetti Strap Top/Dress

This popped up everywhere last year- from Coachella to runways- but they definitely took this one out of our playbook, immaaright ladies?? Gone are the days when you feel silly throwing a plain-sleeved shirt under spaghetti straps just to create extra coverage- because now it is a trend! Depending on your preference, you can play around with the under shirt- short, long, plain, adventurous.

  1. Waist Cincher Over Baggy Top

This one is the perfect mix of modest yet form fitting. What’s great is that this look is totally adjustable to your preferences. You can just wear a plain white tee, or dress it up with a baggy blouse. You can use a longer top as a dress or throw on a pair of your favorite jeans. You’re guaranteed to find waist cinchers at your local mall, in different colors and designs. Mix and match them with different tops to rock your own style!

  1. Statement Sleeves & Ruffles

I'm wearing these in the photo above, but couldn't cut out a cute baby. Usually spring and summer are characterized by strappy tops, cutouts, and cropped items. Which in all honesty look super cool. But, if you don’t wear them like me, then it can be harder to look hashtag super cool (did I really just say that?). Recently we have been graced by a trend that for the most part is expressed through long sleeve tops. You can go really subtle with this, with a plain flowy blouse that has a slight flare on the sleeves, or you can go all out catwalk statement piece with a structured bell sleeve- you do you, boo.

  1. “We Should All Be Feminists” shirt

This trend is not specific to any category besides being a big hooray for womankind- and we’re all about that.

But there is definitely a benefit to taking care of yourself. As women, we are so often caretakers. That's a really beautiful thing, but there's also beauty in feeling great while we take care of others. How can we give everyone our best selves when we don't feel our best?

Mama, Don't Ever Think That You're Not Enough.

I’m a relatively new mama. Ten months in, and I’ve learned a lot about caring for a small human and even more about caring for myself. I had my son at the very pivotal age of 21 when you supposedly have your life together but in reality, can’t find a matching pair of socks.

How Can We be for All Women?

Because we do not identify with just one religion or culture, we don't feel comfortable serving just one group. Our work in the past has inspired us to work in a multicultural setting now and taught us important lessons about how to do so. The best, and maybe only, way to do this is by starting with respect to build trust over time.
