From the get-go, the ladies at ASIYA were super supportive of barhoomBrands. We are so lucky to have them on our team and to be able to have their awesome products in our bags. Below we interview ASIYA co-founder, Jamie.
What inspires you to do the work that you do?
A recent study found that 94% of senior businesswomen played sports. And we know that sports participation helps not only with leadership, but building self-confidence, establishing healthy lifestyles, and helping kids achieve academically as well. Now contrast that with the fact that less than 20% of Muslim females participate in sports -- which is far less than their peers. At ASIYA, we are inspired by the opportunity to enable sports participation and physical activity while upholding cultural beliefs. We don’t think you should have to choose between your religion and an active lifestyle.
What void are you and your company filling?
We are sick of layering and fidgeting with our clothing to be able to be physically active. Muslim women deserve modest activewear that is both stylish and keeps them cool -- like the best sports performance wear on the market. At ASIYA, we started by launching sports hijabs, as we found that to be the biggest need--and something that didn’t exist in the United States. We are currently working on expanding our collection to include active tops and bottoms as well, which we have been receiving a lot of requests for.
What would you like our customers to know about you?
ASIYA is a mission-driven, social venture, focused both on making best-in-class modest activewear but also increasing physical activity and sports participation rates among Muslim women. We are a Muslim owned business, we co-create our products with Muslim girls and women in our local Minneapolis community, and are Made in the USA. We are proud to be Muslim, and are proud to support active Muslim women who are living full, rich lives.
This quarter, we're donating 5% of our proceeds to Heifer International. Heifer International empowers families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity – but their approach is more than just giving them a handout.
